Save the date

Writer's picture: Gig Buddies SydneyGig Buddies Sydney

Dear Gig Buddies community,

We cordially request that you save the date for our 10th birthday.

Our recent birthday parties and Christmas catch ups have taken place on a weeknight, making it difficult for some to either attend and for others to properly let their hair down.

Well, we’ve taken on board your feedback and we’re looking forward to celebrating our 10th on Saturday 31 May.

Further details on our birthday bash will be shared within the coming weeks, but for now mark the date in your diary.

Over and out

We recently wrapped up our February offerings, connecting with buddies in Macquarie Park and Oatley.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for a bite to eat and a spot of karaoke. To see more snaps from all of last month’s gatherings, click here.

Each and every month we invite buddies to connect with us for our online chats.

Our chats take place via Zoom. To attend get in touch via text: 0422 061 990 or Facebook Messenger.

Two up

We’ve a new pair of pairings to tell you about.

Say hello to Henry and Satya (left, L - R) and Imogen and Pam (right, L - R). We look forward to hearing more about their forthcoming adventures.

Team LGBTQIA+

Following our recent social gathering at Fair Day - our first LGBTQIA+ and allies social event - we’re hosting a Zoom to start work on establishing Gig Buddies’ very own LGBTQIA+ user-led team.

Taking place on Tuesday 1 April at 6pm, the meeting will be more of a ‘get to know each other’ session. We’ll also be finding out what attendees would like to get out of being part of the group - and how Gig Buddies can best support to facilitate.

Get ready to share your thoughts, suggestions and ideas!

"….I went on a birthday cruise to Tasmania"

Each and every month we share the news and views of those who make up our user-led team, Soul Fly Buddies.

Today we hear from Lachy, who tells us about time in Tasmania and being mugged by kangaroos!

"I had a fun month in January as I went on a birthday cruise to Tasmania. We went down to Hobart to see the exhibition called Namedropping at MONA which was very interesting. It was all about things associated with famous people like David Bowie, Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley to just name a few. We also looked around the rest of the gallery before we got back on the MONA ferry to Constitution Dock where our cruise ship was.

On the cruise I really enjoyed listening to the live band, Rhythm and Jive, every night. I’m now Facebook and Instagram friends with members of the band so I can follow their adventures on the ship.

On our first day back home we went to the Australian Reptile Park in Somersby where we saw quite a few different animals and got mugged by a few kangaroos who really wanted the contents of the bag of ‘roo food we had bought."

This forthcoming Saturday (8/3) is International Women’s Day.

Gig Buddies Sydney and Central Coast stand in support of this year’s theme: Accelerate Action.

Taken from the IWD website: “At the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158, which is roughly five generations from now, to reach full gender parity, according to data from the World Economic Forum.

Focusing on the need to Accelerate Action emphasises the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. It calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face, both in personal and professional spheres.

So, together, let's Accelerate Action to speed up the rate of progress worldwide.”

From a Gig Buddies’ perspective, we also want to say “thank you” to the countless number of women who have not only contributed their time to the project, but have made a lasting impact on improving social inclusion for people with disabilities.

Calling all musicians

And finally, do we have any budding musicians who may be interested in performing at our 10th birthday?

As we mentioned in our intro, details on our 10th extravaganza will land soon. In the meantime we’re wanting to hear from any singers, instrumental artists, acoustic duos or DJs who would be interested in performing.

If you are interested or would like to know more, get in touch via email: info@gigbuddiessydney.org
