Next stop, The Barrie

As revealed two weeks ago, plans for our 8th birthday party are now confirmed.

We invite buddies to join us on Thursday 11 May as we blow out the candles on our cake.

We’ll be taking over The Barrie in Chippendale. To celebrate turning eight we're taking a trip back in time - to the 1920s. Come dressed for the occasion (fancy dress is entirely optional).

Whether you’re based in Sydney or on the Central Coast, we invite you dust off those dancing shoes and party with us.

Our 8th birthday party runs from 7 - 10pm and tickets cost $35 per person (food and live music included).

For more information about our birthday party at The Barrie, and to purchase your ticket, click here.

A VIP in our midst

A very special guest will also be in attendance at our birthday bash.

Flying all the way from London and landing on the morning of the event, we’ll be joined by Gig Buddies creator, Paul Richards.

As many of you would know, Paul started the Gig Buddies project in Brighton back in 2013. It has since been replicated throughout the UK, as well as branching out on the Central Coast.

We’re honoured to have Paul’s company for the night. If you would like to meet the founder of Gig Buddies, reserve your place at next month’s birthday gathering.

Give me five!

The world famous Vivid Festival is set to take over Sydney once again.

We recently shared news of the FIVE events that, due to the generosity of event organisers, we’ll be attending.

We invite you to join us at Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House, as part of Vivid Sydney for the following five events:

Thanks to the generosity of event organisers, all tickets are $20 each. And for the first time, a Gig Buddies staff member will also be in attendance at each gathering.

For more information about each event, including how to reserve your place, load up the links above.

Vivid Festival runs from May 26 to June 17. To find out more about other gigs they’re bringing to Sydney, click here.

We thank Vivid Festival and the Sydney Opera House for their ongoing support and generosity.

May movements

In addition to our birthday party and Vivid Live outings, we’ll also be hosting two events next month.

First up, we invite you to connect with our newest staff member, Jess. She will be hosting a dinner gathering in Miranda. And later in the month we head to Gosford for Central Coast’s Comic Con.

To sign up for our additional May outings, load up the links below.

Action in April

Before we get to the month of May, we still have three April outings to facilitate.

Starting this Saturday, we invite buddies aged 40 and over to connect with us in the CBD. One week later we then head to Parramatta’s Timezone Arcades during the day, rounding the evening off with a boogie in Waitara for live music courtesy of Jellybean Jam.

Please note, the 90s music trivia gathering scheduled for April 27 has sold out.

For more information about our April gatherings (and to sign up), load up the links below:

And if you have any questions about our Vivid outings, birthday party, or our April or May plans, get in touch: we can be reached via Facebook Messenger, email: info@gigbuddiessydney.org or via text or phone call on 0411 252 228.

Each and every week we invite buddies to connect with us for our weekly chat.

Our chats take place via Zoom. To attend get in touch via text: 0422 061 990 or Facebook Messenger.

Get arty!

It was wonderful to catch up with buddies last Wednesday.

We headed to the Art Gallery of NSW, taking a tour of the famous building. To see more snaps from the evening, click here.

Five newbies

We’ve been on a pairing spree.

Since you last heard from us we’ve matched up Julia and Erin (top left, L - R), Todd and Gavin (top right, L - R), Candice and Keith (left, L - R), Donna and Justin (bottom centre, L - R), and Fergus and Ben (bottom right, L - R).

Prepped and ready to go

And we’ve also been busy on the training front.

Thanks to newly trained volunteers Alexandra (top), Hibah (left) and Mo (right) for joining us on Zoom last week.

Gig Buddies on the cheap

We continue to push our ‘gigs under a tenner’ segment.

We’re all for making things as easy as possible for buddies - and we appreciate that financially, some may be feeling the pinch given the rise in cost of living.

Understandably, cost of living pressures can have an impact when it comes to socialising. We obviously want to ensure buddies continue to catch up - and we’re all for trying to make things easier.

Since our initial push we have added to our ‘gigs under a tenner’ list. We also want to say thank you to those who have also shared their suggestions.

If you’re after a cheap idea for a Gig Buddies catch up, check out our ‘gigs under a tenner’ page by clicking here.

And we’re always looking for new suggestions. If you have a thrifty idea, please share it via the same link.

Support worker needed

And lastly, our parent company, ACL Disability Services, is looking for a disability support worker.

Working in a small team, the position is based around a fortnightly roster, which includes some sleepover shifts. They’re looking to hire a permanent part time support worker (up to 76 hours a fortnight) in their Chatswood group home.

Working with 5 adults with mild to moderate learning disability and autism, the position entails assistance with daily living skills and some personal care - as well as community access through a variety of social opportunities. A driving license is essential.

Other duties include assisting residents to attend medical and other appointments.

While some experience in the disability or allied sector is an advantage, this is not essential. Rather, they are looking for a person who will be the right fit for their clients and staff.

As a small organisation ACL offer a high level of support in the position, as well as paid training.

If you think this is a fit for you or someone you know, send through your CV to Aine Bourke, House Manager, to aine@assistcom.org
